The first birth defect we will discuss is Arnold-Chiari malformation. This birth defect affects the brain and spinal cord, resulting in a misalignment of the two structures. In some cases, this can cause hydrocephalus (excess fluid buildup on the brain) or other neurologic symptoms such as headaches, balance problems, and difficulty swallowing. Arnold-Chiari malformation is usually diagnosed through an MRI scan or CT scan of the brain.
