A patient may be perceived or treated as incoherent because he or she is in a wheelchair or because he or she cannot talk. This can be very demeaning for a person, as he or she often understands perfectly well what is being said or done. On the other hand, patient may be viewed as lying about their condition, as the person may appear healthy. This can affect the level of support and care the patient receives and he or she may even be dismissed as an attention seeker. To avoid this kind of treatment, carers should always view and treat patient as capable and intelligent and treat them in ways that promote empowerment, dignity and well-being.
