What is the Safe and Sound Protocol?

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a program that is based in research on the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and the social and emotional responses of a person. It’s aim is to stimulate the nervous system by exercising the auditory system with music that has been processed in a specific manner.

The technique involves listening to music that has been processed so that it ‘retunes’ the nervous system (thus regulating the patient’s state) so that the patient becomes more socially engaged and more open to therapy. The result is that better state regulation results in improved therapeutic outcomes and that the patient is not only able to better interpret human speech but also the emotional meaning of that speech. This results in an improvement in interpersonal relationships for the patient and the ability to engage and learn is enhanced.
