Probably the most popular thing to do in Mount Gambier is to enjoy the stunning scenery the town is famous for. The second largest town in Australia boasts lakes, caves and sinkholes to explore and is considered the heart of Australia’s Limestone Coast. Highlights of a visit here include the Blue Lake, located in an extinct volcano crater, and the spectacular Umpherston sinkhole, where feeding the tame possums has become popular. Also popular is the Kilsby Sinkhole, which has become one of the country’s best diving sites. It isn’t all outdoor adventures; Mount Gambier also offers plenty of craft and art shops, restaurants and bars, as well as plenty of accommodation options and several historic sites. It’s also a convenient base in which to spend a few days or longer exploring the beautiful natural scenery of this part of South Australia.
