About one percent of people worldwide have autism, and there are some common autism signs and symptoms, although these can affect different people in a different way. Many people with autism seem to be emotionally detached or distant from family and friends; they also aren’t good at empathizing with others. Common with autism are uncontrollable and unpredictable outbursts and emotions, such as becoming irritable, impatient or losing one’s temper. Children with autism are typically slow at developing language skills and may need the help of a speech therapist; non verbal communication such as gestures can also be an indication of autism. Another sign of autism, especially in children, is the inability to distinguish reality from fantasy or imagination. However, autistic people are more than capable of leading normal lives, including living alone, having a job and maintaining positive friendships and relationships.
