When people think of what an adult is, we usually think of someone who is totally independent. However, there are many adults who, for various reasons, are not independent. This includes adults that are disabled, either physically or mentally, or adults that are elderly and infirmed. Such people are considered to be vulnerable and are therefore entitled to certain protections.
Abuse of the elderly or disabled can happen in many different situations. Abuse can be either physical, emotional or even financial. If you work in an industry that deals with vulnerable adults, such as health care, you may need to undergo Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults Training. This training will not only help you to recognize cases of abuse but it will also equip you to take steps to remedy the situation. Your Human Resources personnel can assist to arrange this training.
