Pandas with Autism-like Symptoms: Understanding PANDAS Disorder

Pandas disorder autism is a lesser-known disorder that affects children. PANDAS stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections. It is a condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the brain, causing behavior changes similar to autism.

Children with PANDAS may suddenly develop OCD, tics, anxiety, irritability, and trouble with handwriting. They may also have trouble with social interactions. The disorder typically occurs in children aged 3-12 and may occur after a strep infection.

Unfortunately, PANDAS disorder autism is often misdiagnosed as purely behavioral problems. However, with proper diagnosis and treatment, children with PANDAS can live normal and productive lives.

Treatment usually involves antibiotics to treat the underlying strep infection. Anti-inflammatory medications, plasma exchange therapy, and intravenous immunoglobulin IVIG may also be used to control inflammation and reduce symptoms.

It is important to recognize the symptoms of PANDAS disorder autism in children and seek professional help from a qualified healthcare provider. Parents and teachers should be aware of any sudden changes in behavior in children, especially after an illness.

PANDAS disorder autism is a rare but serious autoimmune disorder that affects children. Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve the lives of affected children.
