The In-service Training for Teachers (INSET) programme initially began as a means to equipping students at teacher training institutions with the necessary practical skills to tackle the realities of the teaching profession. Realising the positive impact of the initial trials, education departments around the world have turned it into a policy standard with clear-cut objectives.
Curriculum-based INSET
This basically introduces student teachers to the exciting world of the teaching profession and allows them to learn the ropes of the practical demands of teaching in the real world. They are assigned to classes and are given the opportunity to prove themselves worthy. In addition, they are exposed to periodical assessment by their lecturers.
Skills-based INSET
The education system has since evolved from curriculum-based INSET to skills-based INSET. This is whereby short developmental workshops are held for qualified teachers in order to enhance their proficiency in selected areas.
Whichever way you look at it, Inset training for teachers is invaluable. Do yourself a favor and jump onto the bandwagon.
