Sparkling wine was created by mistake. According to myth, monk Dom Perignon decided to bottle wine that had fermented by mistake. Due to a sudden drop in temperature in the region, the wine continue to ferment resulting in a carbonated beverage that was surprisingly wonderful. The French adapted the wine quickly and it has now become the standard wine produced in the Champagne region of France.
Depending on the fermentation and sweetness, producers label their wines as extra-brut, brut, extra dry and demi-sec. Winemakers also segregate the quality of French sparkling wine based on making. In descending order of quality, French sparking wine is made in the champagne method, charmat method or by carbonation. All of these wines will have different sweetness levels and may vary in color from red to white to rose. Prices vary depending on region, type of manufacture and sugar content.
