How are doTERRA essential oils made, you might ask. Not one specific method is used as different plants call for different extraction methods. Knowing which method is best is a carefully honed skill that many consider more of an art.
The main two methods, used to extract oils from the plants, are expression and steam distillation. Expression is also commonly know as cold press. The expression method simply physically presses the oils out of a plant without using any heat. Steam distillation uses the heat and pressure from steam to pull the oils out of the plant. The temperature of the steam depends on the plant as each breaks down at different temperatures.
The skill of knowing which extraction processes to use on which plants is the key to the best quality product. It makes the process of making essential oils much more of an art.
