Pinched or compressed nerves can occur in a number of areas in the body, usually causing pain or tingling. The earlier that the problem is diagnosed and treated, the better chance one has of easing symptoms and possibly reversing the problem. Nerve compression problems often begin in the spine or in the other joints int eh body and can radiate from the source to cause pain far from the affected area.
In severe cases, surgery may be needed to correct the condition. The most common treatment is to rest the affected area. Other common pinched nerve treatments include taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen to reduce swelling or injection of anti-inflammatory drugs into the affected area. Physical therapy sessions, where patients learn how to strengthen surrounding muscles, may also provide relief. Traction, or placing an affected joint in a splint, is used in some cases.
