Overseas volunteer programs can be a great way to see the world, and do some good work at the same time. It’s important to remember that a volunteer program isn’t a vacation, although you will have some free time and your accommodation and meals are typically provided. If you like the idea of volunteering overseas, give some thought as to where you want to travel; many destinations are what used to be known as third world countries, in Asia, Africa or South America. Always work with a reputable and well established company, and make a point of reading reviews and comments from other volunteers. And choosing a program based on your interests or skills is a good idea too; you may be more suited to teaching in a classroom than constructing buildings in the heat. But the right choice can mean a life changing experience.
