Caligfornia’s Dog Leash Law

The state of California has an enforceable law which prohibits pet owners from allowing their dogs to be on public property or the property of others without a substantial leash that measures six feet or less. California leash law limits the occurrence of dog bites and other forms of damage that can be caused by uncontrolled dogs.

Pet owners who are transporting their dogs in open vehicles also must follow strict laws regarding their vehicle construction. The open vehicle must have sides at least 46″ high or the dog must be cross-tethered if your dog is riding in it.

It is not lawful to lease a dog onto a parking meter, post or anything outside while you enter an establishment that doesn’t allow pets to enter. Doing so, is a misdemeanor.

If your dog is caught off leash in any of the areas noted above, you may receive a citation, be forced to appear in court and be fined.
