About High Speed Cameras

High speed cameras are designed to capture multiple frames in sequence at an extremely high rate. Regular videos record and play back still images at about 30 frames per second to ensure decent transitions between each frame. Some can do so at 60 frames per second for even smoother playback. However, this still pales in comparison with what high-speed models can achieve which is hundreds or even thousands of frames every second.

With such a lofty frame rate, it is possible to view events in slow motion with great clarity and smoothness. This is important in cases where there are disputes as to what has exactly transpired. Take the case of the automotive industry that has strict testing protocols for safety features. Crash tests in the lab require multiple cameras to cover different angles. Their recordings are played back in ultra slow motion for analysis.
